About GO excursionists from Sumter, among them a number of ladies, arriv ed here this morning on the mail train and embarked at the depot on the Pass port for Smith ville. The Sumter' Ligh1 Infantry did not come as an organiza tion, although many of its members were present in citizen's dress. A New Boat. Capt. R. P. Paddison, who was in this city to-day, tells ns that he has abandoned all idea of raising add re building the steamer John Dawson, which was burned some weeks since. Instead, he has contracted for an entire new boat and she is to be ready for the river, according to the contract, by the first day of October. Personal Prof. W. B. Phillips, of this city, has bee"n elected Professor ot Agriculture, Chemistry and Mining in the State University. Charlotte Observer:' Mrs. H. C. Jones and family. Miss Bessie Myers and Miss Fannie Orr left yesterday af ternoon for Smithville, where they ex pect to remain during the Summer. Mr. John M. Chasten, who has been absent from the city several; days, re turned last night from Bostoo, Mass.. with his daughter. We hear of a gentleman in tfii3 city wno in going to and fro, on his way to business or to hi3 home, is in fear of being attacked by a savage dog at , one part of his journey and in fear ot being drenched with water from a second story window at another. We know of no help for him unless he carries a loaded pistol in one band and a raised umbrella in the other. "j Mortuary Report. The report of the Dr. F. W . Potter, city physician, tor the month ended June 30th 1885, shows the number, of deaths lit the city during that period to be as folio ws : White males, 0, females, 4 total whites, 10. Of this number 4 were adults and 6 were children. jColorded males, 15. females 11 total colored, 26. Ot this number 6 were adults and 20 were children. Total white and colored, 30, from which should' be deducted 1 white dtowned, 7 colored still born and 1 col ored killed, and the number cf deaths from dtseas would be 27. A NarrowKscape. On Tuesday evening last Mr. D.J. McEachern took bis wife and two chil dren in a buggy for a trip to the Sound, and when he bad gone a part of the dis tance he overtook the wagonette, which was loaded with a party for the' same destination. Mr. McEachern undertook to pass the wagonette, and to do so struck his horse with the whip. This caused the l.orso to jump to one side and he landed in the ditch, taking the buggy and all of its occupants with him. The ditch was about four feet wide, four feet deep and was neaily half full of water. In striking the ditch tha buggy was turned oyer, throwing Mrs. McEachern, with the younger child, which she held in ber arms, against the opposite bant:, the., vehicle falling over upon them. The other child was thrown into the water right bahind the horse's heels. The " wago nette was stopped immediately and Mr. W. V. Shaw, Clerk ot the Board of County Commissioners, who was one of the passengers, sprang to the assistance of those in the ditch. The latter were soon extricated from their perilous positions without any further injury than soiled and wet garments and a thorough shaking up. The horse was somewhat bruised and tho shafts of the buggy were broken. It was a for tunate escape from a serious, if not fatal, accident Misses Burr and James1 School. Tho following are tho pupils in this school who received diplomas, medals, prizes and certificates at the recent commencement exercises : The graduates were Misses Mary Van Orsdell and Lula Agostiui and both re ceived diplomas. Excelsior medals were won by Miss Maggie Blue and Miss Maggie Moore, of the second class; Master Eddie Mun son of the third class; Miss Sophie Mc pherson, of the sixth class; and Miss May Barclay, o f the eighth class. School prize for lessons. Miss Callie Reid. French School prize for deport ment, a tie between Misses Augusta McPherson, Lula Garrell and Lula Woody. First class prize, Miss Callie Reid; French certificate, Miss Hcttie Barlow. Second class certificate, Miss Au gusta McPherson.' Third class certificate, Miss Anni? Moore, who would have obtained the Excelsior, but for unavoidable absence, not having failed in lessons during the session. Fourth class prize. Miss Jennie Van Orsdell t certificate, Mis J Katie Walker. Fiffh class prize, Master George Peschau; certificate. Miss Lula Garrell. Sixth class certificate, Master Henry Peschau. As will be seen bv advertisement in another column there will be an ex cursion froaa this city to Washington, I). C, leaving here on tho 13th inst. and returning on the 18ih inst. The lare for the round trip will be only $7,' which is about the cheapest riding of which we have ever heard. By this schedule excursionists will have four entire days in which to view the Capitol City ol the country. Cars will be reserved for tbe exclusive use of white people, and every effort will be made that the trip shall be agreeable to all. Klection of Officers. The financial condition of the Lodge is very good, and considerable interest is being manifested in the " Widows' and Orphans' Reliel Association."
